HPSmithEstateHIGHLAND PARK in northeast Los Angeles holds many honors: the first town to be annexed by Los Angeles (in 1895), the backdrop for Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” and a historic trust of Craftsman and Victorian-style homes.

But few would ever confuse Highland Park for a cultural district. Until now. What was once a sleepy strip of garish 99-cent stores and auto parts shops is turning into a thriving neighborhood of cool restaurants and boutiques that draw young trendsetters in skinny jeans, flannel shirts and Converse high tops.

The turnaround started a few years ago, when real estate prices in nearby Silver Lake and Echo Park increased significantly. Priced-out artists, actors and writers were drawn to Highland Park’s walkable streets and its glut of handsome old homes. Not only was it aesthetically appealing, but the area also had parks, hills and a hushed, small-town feel.

Much of the flurry is clustered along a five-block stretch of York Boulevard, the main drag. “It’s an odd mix of artists, young families and traditional Latino culture,” said Matt Schodorf, who recently opened Café de Leche (5000 York Boulevard; 323-551-6828; www.cafedeleche.net), a Latin-style cafe, with his wife, Anya. “The landscape has changed significantly. Now, everything is centered on one street. It’s rare to find a walking culture in L.A.”

A prime example of the area’s youthful do-it-yourself spirit is Orecul77 (5159 York Boulevard; 323-254-2600; www.orecul77.com), a kind of hipster tailor shop where the owner, Tawni Lucero, renovates old dresses into “one-of-a-kind wearable pieces of art.” The funky brightly colored store, which opened last November, charges $55 to $75 for each dress.

Highland Park feels particularly alive at night, when young arrivals gather at places like the York (5018 York Boulevard; 323-255-9675; www.theyorkonyork.com), a stylish gastropub with brick walls and chalkboard menus. On weekends, the L-shaped bar is often five deep with floppy-haired students from Occidental College nearby, local women in short skirts and high heels and artist types from Silver Lake with shaggy beards and trucker hats.

A few doors down is Johnny’s (5006 York Boulevard; 323-551-6959), a dimly lighted bar with a “Cheers”-like vibe and a jukebox that bounces from Iggy and the Stooges to Led Zeppelin. The pool and foosball tables are a major draw, as are the chilled Jägermeister shots ($6). A favorite among York Street business owners, the bar often blurs into unofficial town hall meetings.

“We’re in a city of nearly four million people, but here it feels like a small town,” said Amy O’Connell, an owner of Society of the Spectacle (4563 York Boulevard; 323-255-4300; www.societyspectacle.com), a fashionable eyewear boutique in a converted 1920s bungalow. “I mean, where else in L.A. do people honk as they drive past?”

One of PeopleConnectors’ missions is to perpetuate the growth & success of each other’s business through referrals, support and an exchange of ideas.  During the month of March,  we will take a break from our normal meeting agenda and instead will conduct ”workshops”   where we will each share the challenges we’re having in our businesses today and discuss ways to meet them.     We’ll have a professional business coach come and speak towards the end of the month to further help polish our skills, make the appropriate shifts in our business and move us towards thriving in these trying times.  If you’re not already a member, please join us on any Thursday morning to see what we are about and how PeopleConnectors may be an avenue to help grow your business.    We meet Thursday mornings at 8:15am at the Carrow’s Restaurant in Highland Park.

Los Angeles Magazine featured Highland Park in their “The 64 Greatest Things about LA” issue (March ‘08).

Rustic architecture and a bold arts scene define this changing neighborhood nestled against the Arroyo Seco.

Long an affordable stronghold of working-class Latino families and Occidental coeds, historic Highland Park is officially on the up-and-up. Killer enchiladas, a funky soda shop, and century-old homes have been joined by gastropubs, galleries, and, well, more enchiladas. Situated along the Gold Line, this turf still feels off the beaten path—just not for long.   Read the entire article

 Hello Friends!

While everything you read in the mainstream media seems to suggest that the housing crisis is intensifying, it is very likely that April 2008 marked the bottom of the U.S. housing market. Yes, the market is bottoming out right now!

This doesn’t mean that prices are about to return to 2005 levels – that likely won’t happen for some time. It just means that the trend is no longer getting worse – which is a critical factor. Read More

The New Year has begun and we’re looking forward to a successful 2008 for all as we grow our group, our businesses and as we help foster positive change in our community.  Looking back on what PeopleConnectors accomplished in its first year, we should all be very proud.    In less than a year, our membership has expanded to over 20 professionals.  Our first fundraiser for the Hathaway-Sycamore Youth Center was a huge success and helped to equip the center with some much needed kitchen items.  Participation in the Eagle Rock Music Festival helped make that another fun event.  Combining forces with the Highland Park Chamber and the NE Figueroa Association, PeopleConnectors contributed to the success of the 63rd Annual NELA Holiday Parade helping with sponsors, entries, and parade logistics – and our float won 2nd prize!   We’ve become known as a community oriented organization of professionals with energy, ideas, commitment and a “get it done” attitude – and our reputation is spreading.   The source of PeopleConnector’s dynamic springs from the individuals that make up the group; business professionals with creativity, character, integrity and a common interest in supporting our community and each other.    Friendships have been cultivated, business has grown, we’ve impacted the community…and this is just the beginning!

We wish everyone a very Happy New Year with many opportunities for success!

Here is an update on the latest regarding the all new Motocross track. You can find more at SunValleyMotocross.com

Bad News – but it ain’t over!

The Planning and Land Use committee voted to support the appeal, in essence opposing the motocross track. Councilman Tony Cardenas sent a staff member to the hearing to relate that “the Councilmember cannot support the motocross track.” Only 5 people showed up in opposition to the project. The fight for the motocross track is not over. This item will be before the full City Council on Wednesday, October 31st at 10:00am. It is imperative that we gain Council support. Show up on Halloween at City Hall – wear your jersey and show your support!Make your voice heard and contact Tony Cardenas and your respective City Council member. Councilman Tony Cardenas may be contacted at 213/473-7006. You may not have heard about People Connectors…yet…but you will.   PeopleConnectors is a professional and diverse networking group based out of Highland Park, CA.  The group meets every Thursday morning at 8am for breakfast at Carrow’s Restaurant in Highland Park.   Their goal is to foster the growth of local professionals, support local businesses and be contributing members to the local community.  Their first charity event was a huge success and helped the Hathaway Sycamore Youth Center stock their kitchen.   This blog (peopleconnectors.org) is a newby but stayed tuned because we’ve got some great things coming your way (check our events page).

Below: Chad “Sunshine” Wood, massage therapist, at the PC weekly breakfast at Carrow’s.
