-       Parents are still the most important influence in their children’s lives. Teens are trying to become adults. One of their greatest difficulties is becoming independent while maintaining a loving relationship with parents.

-       The teen’s struggle for independence becomes a real problem only when it is viewed by the teen and/or parents as a struggle for control.

How can I start to build a better relationship with my teen?

-       Having fun: for example, a good morning smile; be willing to laugh at yourself (reminds them that mistakes are okay);  let fixing meals or shopping together become a time to talk, share stories, or even by silly; share a funny experience with your teen; planning some enjoyable time together that you BOTH choice is a good idea i.e. renting a movie

-       Giving Encouragement: with each bit of encouragement, young people grow to like themselves better. Encouragement means giving less importance to mistakes and more importance to your teenager’s strengths. It focuses on efforts and teens your teen that you have confidence in them.

-       Showing Love: i.e. by saying “I love you,” giving hugs and pats on the back, doing things you know your teen likes such as fixing a favorite meal, speaking and acting with respect, and by allowing your teen to grow in responsibility and independence.

-       Act as you’d like your teen to act: your teenager will learn more from what you do than from what you say. Teens watch your behavior, your attitude, and what seems to work for you. Then they choose for themselves the qualities they value and want. Remember: you are a role-model.

-       Giving Choices (rather than commands): aims at helping teenagers become responsible by showing respect and giving them opportunities to make decisions.

Our group has grown in numbers thereby expanding our resources.  We’re excited to be hosting the event again this year and seeking out various organizations in need in hopes of spreading the love and providing a hearty Holiday meal to the less fortunate in our community.  The date and time will be determined soon (pencil in Wednesday 11/17) – one thing you can count on is that it will be a fun event with music, dancing (think Salsa), food and drink.

So far on the list is a local Women’s Shelter and we are exploring other opportunities as well from kids to seniors and anyone in between.   Your suggestions are welcome!  Check back regularly for updates and the date/time of the event.   And start collecting food, canned goods, pie filling, boxed pie crust, etc.

The annual event takes place on Colorado Blvd, which is open to pedestrians between Eagle Rock Blvd and Argus, from 4pm to 11pm. There is a $5 suggest donation, however no one is turned away. It’s a unique experience with an independent neighborhood vibe and is fun for the whole family.  The festival attracts people from a wide range of backgrounds and ages, creating a gathering place for us to come together to reveal and enjoy the cultural tapestry of our area’s neighborhoods.

Musicians perform at more than sixteen unique venues including a historic church, the American Legion Hall, auto repair shops, a 50’s diner turned Thai restaurant, the balcony of a motel, and two main stages with local acts of all genres – from Experimental, Latin, Reggae and Jazz to Rock, Punk and Gospel.  There is even a Kids Stage to entertain the child in all of us!

Food trucks, street performers, music for everyone and booths featuring local businesses, arts and crafts, community services and more make this a very diverse and fun event.  Colombo’s Italian Restaurant, a landmark in Eagle Rock, puts on a delicious spread with outdoor seating so you can enjoy the scenery and music. There are other great eateries and watering holes you can pop into along the way such as The Coffee Table Lounge, Brownstone Pizza, Four Café, Camilo’s, and more.

A free shuttle service to and from the festival is available from the Eagle Rock Plaza/Westfield Mall, where limited free parking will be available for Festivalgoers. The Plaza is located off of Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock where the 2 and 134 freeways meet.  Otherwise parking is available along the side streets.

Spend 4th of July at the Park

The Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce and City Councilman Jose Huizar (CD-14) will be co-host the “Concerts in the Park and Firework Show” on Sunday, July 4 from 4-9pm at Eagle Rock Recreation Center. Enjoy family friendly fun and entertainment. The firework show will start at 8:30pm. The center is located at 1100 Eagle Vista Dr., Los Angeles, 90041.

Project New Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing and opportunities to low income and homeless families particularly those living with Aids/HIV. PNH is the largest operator of housing for people living with AIDS/HIV in LA County.
